STATE OF THE ART, CLASSES & documentation

We got introduced to Fabricademy, the course objective and content/structure, and to the amazing faculty that will guide us through this journey, namely ANASTASIA PISTOFIDIOU, CECILIA RASPANTI and FIORE BASILE. It was an exciting introduction to the upcoming months. Anastasia gave us an overview of the intersections between textile, fashion and wearable tech industry, highlighting historical precedents as well as contemporary art and design work, pushing the edge of this exciting space.

Cecilia gave us an overview of the classes that we will be covering in the following weeks. The topics are diverse and wildly interesting: from Bio Fabrics and Bio Dyes to E-textiles, to Soft Robotics to Skin Electronics. Some of these topics are TOTALLY NEW to me. The full Wiki for the Fabricademy classes is available here.

DOCUMENTATION

We also got instructed on WHY SHARING IS IMPORTANT and how to DOCUMENT our work for the weekly assignments. Documentation is KEY at Fabricademy, and our evaluation will depend on it heavily. But why is that?

Ultimately, sharing our knowledge gives us the possibility to advance better, quicker and more organically as humanity. Fabricademy is rooted in the prnciples of Fablabs and Fabacademy // PUT TEXT ON FABLIAB VISION OF COLLECTIVE EMPOWERMENT

Initial Ideas for the Final Project

My initial inspirations follow a few different threads, which might or might not be interconnected:

  1. I'm interested in merging traditional textile craft with smart textiles to create garments and accessories with an emerging memory of the local textile tradition. This memory can be expressed in a metaphoric or more literal sense through designs, techniques, materials.
  2. I'm curious to follow-up on the work I did in Colorado with thermochromic ink and conductive yarn, adding a connection to natural phenomena as input for the interactions. I would like to create a garment that changes color or other physical properties by interacting with environmental data
  3. I'm excited to delve deep into the concept of EMPATHY and find a way to create a garment that can increase the wearer's awareness of the emotional state of her/himself and/or of the person that they are interacting with. The goal would be to increase connectedness and respectful interactions with oneself and/or with others.
